Service Project

One Saturday in July, we scheduled a YSA service project.  When we awoke to a thunder, lightning and rain storm, I wondered if our plans would need to be changed.  But, my prayers that morning had included helping us to be able to have a successful service project, so, I felt that if we just went ahead with it, the weather would get better.  After all, the weather forecast just said ‘morning showers’ and with Heavenly Father’s help, the weather predictors could actually be right this day!  :)  Anyway, we just went ahead as planned, and it turned out to be a beautiful day with a cool breeze which was so nice for working in the garden!  :)  Sister Smith, Adri, Ancsa and I traveled 40 minutes by train to Gyömrö to help a Sister from the Pest Ward harvest some of her huge garden.

We had a great time picking two baskets full of currents!

Mine and Adri's basket is nearly full!

Our next job was to pick up the apples on the ground that had fallen from the trees.  To thank us for all of our work, Illona began making a fire in a pit, over which she hung a big pot. Then, she added corn on the cob, laid corn husks over them, added water, and let them boil.  She said that the reason she adds the husks is because it makes the corn more flavorful.  We found out later that it must be true.  That corn was wonderfully sweet!

After eating the delicious corn, we rushed back to the train station to return home to Budapest because Adri had to be to work at 2:00! Even though there were just four of us, we had a great time helping Illona with her harvesting.
